The Power Of Thought – Revolutionary Thinking

Revolutionary Thinking “The greatest discovery of my generation is that a human being can alter his life by altering his attitudes of mind.”- William James

The human mind is an amazing power. In ancient and modern philosophy we have heard, “As a man thinks so is he.” Or as stated by James Allen, “The outer conditions of a person’s life will always be found to be harmoniously related to his inner state…Men do not attract that which they want, but that which they are.” Revolutionary Thinking!

If these statements are true, and they appear to have some validity since they have endured for centuries we can make the case that if your life is not where you want it to be, you can start changing it by realizing your inner state. Great motivational teachers from the beginning of time have realized the power of the mind. All of the products, politics, religions, philosophies, and technological breakthroughs in our human existence have all started with a thought.

The Most Resilient Organism On The Planet

What is the most resilient parasite? Bacteria? A virus? An intestinal worm? No!, An idea. Resilient, highly contagious. Once an idea has taken hold of the brain it’s almost impossible to eradicate.  This is a quote from the movie Inception. It brings to light the power of the mind. On October 30, 1938, War of the Worlds was broadcast over the radio. The style of this broadcast was a series of news flashes that described an alien invasion. Thousands of people were panic-struck and some took their own lives rather than be taken by these fictitious creatures. Was it true? It was to those who believed it. It changed people’s lives forever and demonstrates the power of the mind.

Change Your Thoughts and Change Your Life

I was facilitating a workshop where one of the exercises involve group drumming. I placed a drum in front of each person and in one particular case when I set the drum down the person receiving the drum began to cry. When I asked what was going on, they replied that they were very sad because they could not drum. I asked how they came to this conclusion. They told me the story of a teacher in third grade who told them they should never sing or play a musical instrument because they were completely incapable of tone or rhythm. They were seven years old when this occurred. I rudely asked their current age and suggested that this 50-year-old pattern could be shifted if they were interested. With a sheepish grin they expressed their desire to change this pattern.

I explained to the group, that Everyone Has Rhythm! If we play together long enough each of our individual rhythms will unite and the chaos that sometimes occurs in the beginning eventually falls into order and takes on a life of its own.

The group started playing and as this person struggled to find a rhythm, they eventually surrendered the old pattern and they drummed for two hours! Once they changed their mind, the thing that was holding them back was eradicated. Last I heard they had started a drum circle in their area and they now consider themselves to be a drummer!
